This is one of the most popular and scenic routes of the south-eastern coast of South Africa. Here mountains crowd close to the shoreline which lay dotted with beaches and bays, and vividly coloured wild flowers delight the eye. The Garden Route runs parallel to a coastline featuring lakes, mountains, tall indigenous forests, amber coloured rivers and golden beaches.

The name comes from the verdant and ecologically diverse vegetation encountered here and the numerous lagoons and lakes dotted along the coast. It can truly be said “man’s footprints has made little impact on the rugged and sometimes inaccessible coastline”.

The region provides a stirring study in contrasts. On the one side it is graced by a coastal plateau in a fertile area of lush greenery at the foot of the Outeniqua Mountains. On the other side of the mountains set in a semi-arid valley, it provides the ideal habitat for ostriches which are farmed in the Oudtshoorn district on a grand scale.

Towns include George, the Garden Routes largest city, and main administrative centre, Knysna, Oudtshoorn, Mossel Bay, Plettenberg Bay culminating in the Tsitsikamma Forrest, a fairyland of giant Yellowwood’s, ferns, birds and Nature’s Valley.

A wide range of leisure options, spectacular scenery and a mild climate guarantee unforgettable holidays.
Meandering trails are followed by hikers, whilst the forests invite long leisurely drives, and the lakes and rivers lend themselves to swimming boating and fishing.

The Garden Route stretches on the southern coast from Heidelberg to the Tsitsikamma Forest and Storms River. It’s a nook of the country that offers inspiration to writers and artists whose presence gives the Garden Route a trendy flavour. It is also a top priority for many tourists. The coastal drive links a series of charming towns interspersed with natural beauty. Along the way, every kind of adventure activity is possible; scuba diving, abseiling, fishing and more. Perched on a tumultuous Indian Ocean shore is one of South Africa’s most dramatic protected areas, the Tsitsikamma National Park, combining marine and land attractions. Its indigenous forests are a haven for birdlife. The Klein Karoo, with its towering mountains and sheer gorges, stay one of the most geologically interesting parts of South Africa.

An important geological feature is the Cango Caves, a series of caverns and chambers naturally hewn out of limestone, situated outside the city of Oudtshoorn. The Cango Caves are among the top ten most visited attractions in South Africa. Oudtshoorn itself, the heart of the ostrich feather industry is well worth a visit. The grandiose, old feather palaces are still to be seen, while ostrich farms, now involved in the commercial production of meat, leather; eggs and feathers can be toured.   The more adventurous tourist can endeavour riding an ostrich, naturally providing great fun to the onlookers.

The Garden Route is a strip of land like no other in the world in terms of beautiful mountains, forests and rivers and an array of vividly coloured wild flowers that delight the eye. Its natural attractions and unique flora and fauna, gives reason for its name.

Did You Know!

Three of SA’s top hiking trails are situated on the Garden Route viz.  The Otter, The Tsitsikamma and The Dolphin Trails.

The Garden Route enjoys a Mediterranean climate with warm summers and mild winters. The Garden Route is one of the richest rainfall regions in South Africa. The rain, brought by the humid sea-winds from the Indian Ocean, falls on the weather side of the mountain slopes, while quite the contrary is the case on the inland side.
